Roll Up Your Sleeves
Being a boss doesn’t mean you should be above rolling your sleeves up. Good leaders are also role models. You have to be there. You have to let workers know you are in it with them, but they’d better work damn hard when you’re not around. If you see trash on the floor, pick it up. It lets people on the floor know that even you are not above these menial tasks, and shames them into keeping the place clean and respecting their environment.
If a phone on someone’s desk rings unanswered, pick it up. Workers will see that you consider outside callers, who could be potential customers, to be of utmost priority, and they feel the pressure because their boss was doing their job for them. I do this all the time.
