You Need to be Selfish

The desire to create wealth and live a comfortable existence isn’t a crime. It’s what we’re here for. It’s the whole point. It’s what motivates us to make a profit and build a viable business that puts cash into our pockets both now and in the future. Sure, take care of your employees. Reward and motivate the best workers. But the ownership has to come first. Sacrifice and commitment only get you so far. You also need to be selfish.

You’re embarrassing. You have no idea what life is about. Seriously, you have no grip on life. Shame on you for spreading your anit-family sentiments.

Seth, you hit it right on the head.
George, what qualifies you to say what we are here for? From what I can tell, you are auditioning for the next remake of A Christmas Carol.
George,
Well, the principles (on how to run a small business) are correct, but I don’t know about your concept of the purpose.
The purpose of have a small business goes beyond the “desire to create wealth and live a comfortable existence.” If one wanted to be “comfortable,” you wouldn’t need to work so hard. There’s ways of being comfortable without being rich.
The purpose of creating a profitable business is to achieve something. Yes, you have to be ruthless and determined. But one doesn’t make money just to make money. The money must be generated in the name of some larger purpose or cause. Otherwise, it’s pretty meaningless.
If all you want is comfort, you might as well play golf.

Hi George,
You are so right! People often have the idea that being selfish is bad or evil when in truth selfishness is what brings out the best in individuals. Liberty and the pursuit of happiness is what made this country great. The lack of selfishness, self-sufficiency, and individualism that permeates society is one of the reasons why our country is becoming a nanny state. Profit is indeed what motivates intelligent people and successful businesses.
Do you have any plans to speak in Los Angeles. We need you to talk some sense into the mayor and the city council of L.A.
Best Regards,
Hilda
